The Gathering
Bernadette Giacomazzo
(The Uprising, #1)
Publication date: March 31st 2018
Genres: Adult, Dystopian

The Uprising Series tells the story of three freedom fighters and their friends in high — and low — places that come together to overthrow a vainglorious Emperor and his militaristic Cabal to restore the city, and the way of life, they once knew and loved.
In The Gathering, Jamie Ryan has defected from the Cabal and has joined his former brothers-in-arms — Basile Perrinault and Kanoa Shinomura — to form a collective known as The Uprising. When an explosion leads to him crossing paths with Evanora Cunningham — a product of Jamie’s past — he discovers that The Uprising is bigger, and more important, than he thought.

Inspiration Behind The Gathering: Book One of The Uprising Series
By: Bernadette Giacomazzo for Shooting Stars Reviews
I wish there was an easy way to answer the simple question: what inspired you to write this book?
The reason I can’t answer that simply is because there is no easy answer.
How do you condense what was – and remains – some of the best years of your life into a book of about 150 pages or so?
How do you pay tribute to some of the most amazing people you have ever – and will ever – known?
How do you say “thank you” for the music – for the memories – for the late nights and the early mornings, for the creativity and the love and the creation of kinetic energy?
How, indeed?
You create a story that has a relevance to modern times – you set it in a post-apocalyptic future that leaves no room for error, no quarter for forgiveness, and no chance for redemption – and you make them the heroes of the day, the week, the hour, the lifetime.
You include their names in the book, in your own way. You pay tribute to their colorful personalities, their quirky behaviors, the things that make them, “them.”
And then you get reviews in various publications – you go on a blog tour – you get people to know your name and your work, and they sing your praises from time to time.
And as you collect the accolades, and you listen to the way people marvel at your rich world-building and colorful characters, and take a vested interest in Jamie, in Basile, in Kanoa and Evanora, in Tommy and Rosie and Pualani and Angelique…
You remind them all that but for the fact that you have lived the strangest life you’ve ever known – and met so many creative soldiers of fortune – none of it would exist.
And so, the inspiration for The Gathering: Book One of The Uprising Series is nothing more than New York City herself.
